Many who ride motorcycles always wear their helmet. But it’s a rare drive where you don’t see someone who is choosing not to wear a motorcycle helmet. Are they crazy? What are the reasons to wear a helmet?
Why would anyone in their right mind not wear a motorcycle helmet? There are many reasons. Some feel they cannot afford one. Others where it is not the law choose not to because they can. Many argue they like the freedom of choice.
There are also horror stories about times that helmets are said to have done more harm that good, and lead to injury or death. Some riders feel there are safer without wearing a motorcycle helmet.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. When riding a motorcycle, the best way to protect yourself is by wearing a motorcycle helmet. Studies have shown that helmets drastically reduce motorcycle related fatalities and injuries.
When you’re a motorcyclist, you know that there is a common idea that you’ve either been in an accident, or you will eventually be. Motorcycles can be easily involved in a variety of minor and major accidents.
These accidents, even small ones, can be made drastically worse if you are not wearing a motorcycle helmet for every ride. They are made specifically to protect the head and neck of riders.
Always remember to never buy a helmet used. If the helmet has been dropped or struck in an accident, it won’t protect you, in the same way a bumper loses integrity after a crash. And you can often not tell if it has lost that integrity.
The decision to wear a motorcycle helmet is not always a personal one. Many cities and states require you to wear one anytime you ride on or operate a motorcycle. But regardless, they should always be worn.
